Housing and Facilities

Room & Board

The campus is spread over 780 acres of land, some of which rolls down to a sea beach. All semester abroad students stay on campus at the newly constructed Foreign Students Hostel reserved for foreign students with exceptional comforts. Facilities include:   

  • Kitchen equipped with cooking facilities and cookware
  • Entertainment room with cable television and recreational activities
  • Laundry room with washer
  • Computer with broadband Internet access
  • Telephone
  • Air-conditioning

Three meals per day are delivered to the Foreign Students Hostel. Additionally students have access to on-campus cafeteria, off-campus restaurants, eateries and deliveries.

Campus Facilities

The PU campus has various facilities such as a bank with ATM machine, cafeteria, 24/ 7 health clinic, computer and Internet access, and libraries to provide a comfortable environment for SIP students. Apart from the main library, there are various departmental libraries for projects and research, and teachers are often willing to loan books from their personal libraries. PU has various yoga and sports facilities and students can play basketball, ping pong, badminton, etc.

Bicycles can be used to move around as the university campus is safe and eco-friendly. Students are advised to return to the campus before 10 P.M. Pondicherry University has security guards on campus round the clock.

Library

Pondicherry University has a state of the art Library, open seven days a week from 9:30 AM to 8:30 PM,  with a collection of 119,035 books and 7,597 bound-back volumes of journals. The library has 3,250 theses, 472 current print journals (279 foreign journals and 190 Indian journals) and E-journals in various subjects. The University library has twenty-eight computer systems which include one Unix server, one Novell server, and one CD-ROM server with 7-Drive CD tower and two CD-MIRROR servers for modernizing and automating library operations and services. The library is supported by a staff of fifteen employees and has been recognized by the United Nations Organization as one of its Deposit Centers.

Internet

Wi-Fi is fully implemented on campus and SIP students can use their laptops anywhere on campus.  The hostel comes equipped with wireless internet facilities, as well as a computer which can be used by students who do not bring a laptop with them to India. The free computer center on campus is open from 9:30AM to 8PM, and there is also a relatively cheap on-campus computer center (12rp/hr) which has longer hours and no time limit.

Post Office

There is a post office on campus which will receive and deliver any packages to students from the U.S. and will mail anything large letter size or smaller. For larger packages, students can mail these in town through the government post offices, private couriers, or more familiar couriers such as DHL
