The City
Pondicherry, recently renamed Puducherry, is the location of Pondicherry University. A former French colony, this beautiful town has a large influence of French architecture and cuisine, while remaining close to rural Indian life.
Pondicherry is a safe city and students will not feel uneasy navigating it alone. Most in town travel can be conducted on foot, though auto rickshaw drivers can quickly transport students around town for a small fee. The people in town are accustomed to the presence of foreigners and their style of dress due to the high number of tourists and internationals living in and around the city and in Auroville.
Within the city you can find both French-style cathedrals and traditional Hindu temples. The city also has a long walkway along the coast which is very popular for locals and tourists alike. Pondicherry is also famous for yoga training and arts education, and there are a variety of centers which conduct classes in town. The city celebrates both Indian and French holidays, as well as its own independence holiday shortly after India's Independence Day in August.
Pondicherry's proximity to rural villages allows students to come in close contact with village life, which lies at the heart of Indian culture. Since 70% of India's population lives in villages, this interaction is critical for a students understanding of traditional Indian life. There is a constant flow of festivals and events going on in town, and the city is unique in that it celebrates French holidays as well.
Sri Aurobindo Ashram
Housed in the city is the internationally renowned Sri Aurobindo Ashram. At the Ashram students can learn about the life and teachings of both Sri Aurobindo and The Mother. The Ashram also has a unique library as well as handmade products in paper and silks.
Auroville
One of the largest sustainable-living communities in the world, Auroville is located between the University and Pondicherry town. Auroville is an international community of around 1,700 residents working to build human unity, and much about their philosophy and way of life can be found there. There is also some unique and captivating architecture particularly the Marimandir, a spiritual and physical center with a central meditation chamber.
Outside of Auroville is the Auroville Beach which has a relaxing café and a beach where Europeans and Americans alike can feel free to relax and tan.
