Pondicherry, recently renamed Puducherry, is the location of Pondicherry University. A former French colony, this beautiful town has a large influence of French architecture and cuisine, while remaining close to rural Indian life. Pondicherry is a safe city and students will not feel uneasy navigating it alone. Most in town travel can be conducted on foot, though auto rickshaw drivers can quickly transport students around town for a small fee. The people in town are accustomed to the presence of foreigners and their style of dress due to the high number of tourists and internationals living in and around the city and in Auroville. Within the city you can find both French-style cathedrals and traditional Hindu temples. The city also has a long walkway along the coast which is very popular for locals and tourists alike. Pondicherry is also famous for yoga training and arts education, and there are a variety of centers which conduct classes in town. The city celebrates both Indian and French holidays, as well as its own independence holiday shortly after India's Independence Day in August. Pondicherry's proximity to rural villages allows students to come in close contact with village life, which lies at the heart of Indian culture. Since 70% of India's population lives in villages, this interaction is critical for a students understanding of traditional Indian life. There is a constant flow of festivals and events going on in town, and the city is unique in that it celebrates French holidays as well.
