Experiencing the Arts & Indian Architecture in India
This course introduces the rich and diverse architectural/artistic expressions of Indian cultures through their most vibrant examples – from the towering temple shikharas and iconic Mughal mausolea in the north to the early sculptural relief works and vast temple cities of the south, from regional vernacular of town houses to the spectacular palaces of the Rajputs, from the temple cities of the Jains to the grand urban mosques of India’s Muslim communities. A number of representative examples from various periods and locations will be reviewed through a discussion of both their broad religious and cultural environments and their detailed spatial and artistic characteristics.
