Idea of India in Literature
India is generally perceived as a land of exoticism and mysticism. Many contemporary media reports also view it as a land of depravity and poverty. There are still others who see the land as a developing nation filled with contradictions. The present course is drafted with the view that some of the above mentioned notions are discussed using some literary works by Indian writers. At the end of the course, students develop basic understanding of Indian nationalism, gender and class constructions, caste and religious politics, issues of secularism, communalism and fundamentalism, concepts of colonialism and national identity.
